 Design Challenge

Problem Space

The challenge they bestowed on us was to bring brick and mortar sensory experiences online so that consumers around the world can get an enriched shopping experience like the one they may get in store. Each team was lead by a Shopify mentor/coach and we are off to the races to solve the design challenge at hand!

In order to do so, I asked myself the following questions in pursuit of a solution:

  • When do consumers make their purchase online vs in-store?

  • Which items do consumers purchase online vs in-store? and the reasons as to why?

  • What are the key aspects that make for a great overall shopping experience online vs in-store?

 Secondary & Primary Research

Secondary Research

95%

of people shopping online in North America will not give up in-store shopping.

80%

of shoppers will go to the store to buy when they have an item they need or want immediately.

64%

of adults said they end up spending more money when they shop with friends.

Primary Research

“I love shopping with friends and family, I get a sense of security and have a lot of fun when we got out shopping”

— Interviewee 1

“Consumers are more likely to believe recommendations from people they know and trust , “FRIENDS & FAMILY”

— Interviewee 2

“I want a second opinion when I am out shopping and buying new lipstick color or eye shadow!”

— Interviewee 3

 Design Question

With our research in place, we were now able to deduce that consumers are looking for an interactive shopping experience, with people who’s opinion they value, trust, and most importantly, need in order to make a purchase they feel confident in and not suffer from buyers remorse.

The key theme that consumers were looking for was enhancing the social aspect of the shopping experience, so we asked ourselves:

“How might we provide a social aspect for consumers to enhance their shopping experience?”

BrainStorming

To solve the problem, we looked at emerging technology that supplements experiences that typically requires people to be in the same physical space. In doing so, we were able to identify and leverage Shopify’s newly rolled out 3D imaging and AR/VR technology and incorporate that into our design solution.

Persona

At this stage, we wanted to create a persona. This will help us outline what motivates our users and the types of services to push forward, which provides us with the design inspiration needed to begin the ideating process.

Heather Sanderson

“I enjoy shopping online, but I love shopping in person with my friends even more”.

Behaviours

  • Enjoys exploring new fashions

  • Loves to redecorate her home

  • Has fun shopping with her friends

Painpoints

  • Missing social aspect when online shopping

  • Online shopping can be inefficient

  • Needs a second opinion to make a confident purchasing decision

Ideation

Sketches

While putting ourselves in the shoes of our persona, we began sketching out our ideas to unlock and explore potential design solutions that will best bring the social aspect our users are looking for.

Some of the key features worth noting are the following as depicted in the sketches from right to left below:

Get a friend or expert to help choose a colour of a product that is suitable to a room or overall outfit

Inviting a friend via call to share your screen and give feedback on a product in consideration through the use of augmented reality (A/R) technology

Have the ability to show a product on oneself through the use of A/R

We ultimately decided to pursue the solution of allowing the user to invite a friend via video call so they can share their screen with the items being considered to gain feedback on through the use of augmented reality (A/R) technology.

It was then time to test the idea and transition into usability testing!

 Putting Together Our Final Solution

Usability Testing

We had a few prototypes in place, which we tested with 5 participants.

Key areas for improvement gained from the feedback can be seen below:

Changing the language of “Virtual Tour” to “View in my space”. This was done to mitigate the confusion as many users thought this button would give them a tour of the store as oppose to being able to use the A/R technology to see the product in their own personal space.

Denying the user the ability to remove or add an item to the cart while using A/R. The option of keeping the items in the cart until after the video call was over was more comfortable and habitual for making a better user experience.

Pocket Market

Hard work, sweat and tears of joy went into this solution so that we can finally give you Pocket Market!

See for yourself by exploring the prototype below :)

Personalize your space:

The app that allows a user to virtual assess if items they are shopping for suit their personal space.

Shop with a friend:

Furthermore, if they are still having trouble deciding, they have the ability to invite a friend via video call to take part in the virtual shopping experience and gain their opinion on which items to buy or leave behind.

At the end of the call the user is left feeling reassured and confident in their purchase, but also joyful for having had a fruitful shopping experience with a friend whose opinion they value and company they enjoy.

 Future Considerations

Measuring Success

  • Increase in rate of A/R video chats

  • Decrease in rate of returned items due to buyers remorse

  • Increase in rate of repeat customers

Challenges

  • Feasibility of Technology

  • Influencing market adoption of the product

Opportunities

  • Integration with A/R smart devices

  • Integration into Shopify apps

  • Exploring VR possibilities

Next Steps

  • Develop AR fitting room

  • Increase video call capacity to 2+ members

  • Explore more features for interacting with the community

I hope you enjoyed the read!

Happy to connect to further discuss my thought process and assess the potential of working with one another down the road :)
